About the Animals at Exotic Pets and More Inc.
There are many animals available and cared for at the Exotic Pets facility in Palm Beach Gardens. While these pets are available for individuals to purchase, the company cautions against casual owners who may not truly understand the requirements of owning these types of animals. As such, the company strongly encourages all interested customers to conduct thorough research about these pets ahead of time. For example, many will find that while these pets are exceptional companions and a delight to own, they still require a great deal of attention and resources—much more than the average pet such as a cat or dog.
In order to encourage customers to take their time before deciding on owning one of these exotic pets, the facility highlights some of the animals it has offered in the past or is currently breeding and brokering:
- Common Marmoset
The common marmoset is easily distinguished by its white tufts of hair that are found around their ears and long striped tails. Also referred to as the “White Tufted Marmoset,” this small primate comes from the eastern region of Brazil. While many are surprised to find just how small these marmosets are, it is important to understand that these monkeys are actually some of the tiniest primates found in the entire world. Specifically, adult common marmosets typically weigh anywhere from 300 to 500 grams, with a head to body length averaging around 7.3 inches.
Although incredibly small, the common marmoset is one animal that requires extensive levels of care. Captive common marmosets share a diet similar to that of tamarins and require foods that offer varied nutritional value, as the type of food they eat can impact their growth rate, comfort, lifespan, reproductive health and overall health. Common marmosets must also have adequate housing that not only meets specific environmental conditions, but can allow the monkeys to move around and remain at a significant height. Since common marmosets are used to spending their days foraging for food in the wild, it is important that owners have the adequate resources to make sure that these animals do not become bored too quickly, as boredom can attribute to higher levels of stress in the primate.
- Owl Monkeys
Many animal lovers will immediately recognize the owl monkey by its distinctive large eyes. While there are many subspecies of the owl monkey, most are familiar with the red-necked owl monkey—commonly identified by its orange-red neck fur. The large eyes of the owl monkey serve a unique purpose, allowing the primate to increased vision to act during the night. In fact, owl monkeys are the only nocturnal monkeys found on the planet.
The owl monkey is native to South American habitats, such as those found in the natural regions of Panama, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia Columbia and Ecuador. Exotic Pets and More Inc. describes these kind, small primates as “one of the gentlest monkeys that exists,” which means that any party interested in caring for these animals must stay aware of all the needs this animal requires.
In addition to accommodating the nocturnal behavior of the owl monkey, owners must also pay strict attention to this primate’s dietary needs. This frugivorous species is used to eating fruit, vegetables and specific dietary food products while in captivity. While the owl monkey is larger than the small common marmoset, its size is still an important factor to consider when owning one—they grow just above one foot in height with a weight range of 1.7 to 2.7 pounds.
- Northern Tamandau
Although the species found at Exotic Pets and More Inc. often fall into the primate category, this facility also cares for and breeds other unique animals, such as the Northern tamandau. The Northern tamandau is an anteater that typically dwells in the tropical forests found throughout Central America. Some may compare the coloring of a northern tamandau to that of a panda, as its fur is predominantly a pale-yellow or white, paired with a black “vest” of fur around the chest area.
The tamandau has many unique dietary needs that typically include soft “milkshake” nutritional blends or fruits to accommodate for the fact that these animals do not have teeth. While these anteaters are known to have a longer lifespan while in captivity, it is critical for owners of all tamandau varieties to stay aware of common health concerns that may impact this animal, such as “anteater pox” and hemophilia.
